The Oceaneer Mark II is a modern version of the highly popular Oceaneer built at Brisbane by the Bliss-Craft company. The original Oceaneer was developed in the traditional manner by gradually refining a series of hulls to fit a particular purpose. In this case the requirement was for a boat which would handle the steep and unpredictable surf encountered in bar crossings such as are encountered around the entrances to Moreton Bay and rivers along the Queensland and N.S.W. coastlines. This made the Oceaneer popular with both professional and amateur fishermen who cross bars to fish in the open sea, and over 100 were built prior to the demise of production wooden boat building. The result has been a boat featuring a high bow to ride over the waves rather than punch through them, a fine deep Vee entry to soften the ride, and a good straight run aft for optimum planing performance. The high bow with its good reserve buoyancy also prevents nose dives in a following sea. The Oceaneer has a fully self draining cockpit floor, supported by buoyancy foam as an important additional safety feature, making the boat unsinkable. The Oceaneer Mark II has been revised to offer all the design features of the original boat, but making it suitable for amateur construction using modern timber-epoxy techniques.
